What is cbd?
CBD is a non psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant and has been used from as far back as 1400 BC. The cannabis plant is made up of more than 500 unique compounds from THC, CBD and CBG.

Don't worry if you've never heard of any of these before, you're in safe hands, we're here to break it all down for you so that you know what you're buying.

IS IT LEGAL?

YES! It is legal to buy, and consume CBD supplements in the UK as long as it only contains trace amounts of THC complying with EU and UK legislation and regulation.

Endocannabinoid System

Back in the 1940’s, scientists discovered the first cannabinoids CBN and CBD, then shortly after, THC.

These were named phytocannabinoids as they are produced in plants.

It wasn’t until the 1960’s that scientists made a huge leap forward and began to isolate and synthesize these compounds. While doing this, researchers found that humans produce cannabinoids on their own, which were named endocannabinioid (endo meaning they are produced in the body).

The ECS controls a range of physiological processes. The ECS is one of our body’s tools for maintaining stability and balance. The most important components of the ECS are the cannabinoid receptors and the endocannabinoid. Lets break this down a bit:

Cannabinoid receptors

There are 2 main Cannabinoid receptors, Cannabinoid Receptor Type 1 (CB1) and Cannabinoid Receptor Type 2 (CB2). CB1 Receptors are found mostly in the brain, while CB2 Receptors are mostly found in the immune system.

So when we take CBD oil, the phytocannabinoids activate the designated receptors. Their job is to influence and control all functions within the nervous, endocrine and gastrointestinal systems.

Endocannabinoids
These glorious little compounds are something that we already have with no additional CBD supplements (WOW)! Unlike the phytocannabinoids, who bind to their designated receptors (either CB1 or CB2), endocannabinoids can bind to their closest Receptor which results in whatever benefit the body requires (the human body is a remarkable machine).

In total, there are 6 endocannabinoids, but only 2 have been thoroughly researched, these are anandamide and 2-AG.
Anandamide

Researchers have nicknamed this the human THC, but it’s most famous nickname is the bliss molecule. Anandamide is produced in the body regularly, but the fatty enzyme FAAH breaks it down very fast.

Studies have shown that by stopping the breakdown of anandamide. It was found that CBD supplements (phytocannabinoids) can stop the fatty enzyme attacking the production of anandamide.

2-AG

2-AG is not only an endocannabinoid, but it is also a neurotransmitter.

This endocannabinoid is produced in the brain, and has up to 170 higher concentration levels than anandamide!
Like anandamide, 2-AG can be broken down by fatty enzymes which stop the benefits of the endocannabinoid. 2-AG is very important.

It’s important to note that cannabis products need to be full spectrum to produce the most effect

Entourage Effect

Since the discovery of the amazing benefits of CBD products, research scientists have delved in to the world of Cannabis to see if they can make any more fascinating discoveries. Turns out, they have.

These talented scientists have now discovered what they call “The Entourage Effect”. To put it simply, it’s been found that CBD products are more beneficial to our ECS when the cannabis plant is used as a whole plant extract rather than isolated compounds.

Studies have suggested that it may be possible to boost the pro-cognitive (decision making, reasoning, logic thinking and understanding) therapeutic effectiveness of CBD through a synergistic approach.

An example of how the Entourage Effect works is likened to an orchestra where many musicians support and harmonise the melody provided by the soloists
